SD cards or secure digital cards are constant companions to all kinds of cameras, may it be a pink digital camera, kids digital camera and mini digital camera; as well as electronic devices which have storage capability. SD 4 GB cards are non volatile memory cards developed by SanDisk, Toshiba and Panasonic for use in portable devices. Standard cards can store up to 4GB but SDHC or secure digital high capacity cards can store up to 32GB.
The SD was conceptualized in august of 1999. It was designed to compete with Sony’s memory stick format. The signature SD logo was developed for another use, the Super Density Disc. The SD memory card is a highly sophisticated memory device which is about the size of a postage stamp. There are many types of SD cards available in the market for use.
Types of SD Cards
There are three basic types of SD cards. These types have normal SD card dimensions and are very handy and compatible with most devices. The advent of technology, wherein more devices are becoming smaller brought about the need for smaller SD cards.
- 4 GB SD card. This is the memory card of the regular size. This has various storage capacities, ranging from 2GB to 16GB.
- 4 GB MiniSD cards. These are 37% smaller than the regular sized cards. These are compatible with smaller devices. They function exactly like normal cards. They have the same storage and speed of the SD card. These are sometimes used with adapters for transferring digital data to any SD enabled device.
- 4 GB MicroSD cards. These are even much smaller than MiniSD cards. The mobile industry is the main reason why these cards were developed. These are used for mobile phones. It is one fourth the standard size of an SD card.
Both the MiniSD and the MicroSD cards are backwards compatible. They can be used in place of the standard card as long as there is an adapter. MicroSD, on the other hand, also support SDIO mode unlike the other two. SD is less open than USB flash memory drives and CompactFlash. However, SD is much more open than Memory Stick. SD cards can be accessed freely using the SPI/MMC mode.

- Purpose of the card. What is the card going to be used for and what device will it be on? Consult the manual of the device before making a purchase to make sure that you purchase the right size of memory.
- Establish the size you desire. A 4GB card I suitable for most devices but if you fell you need more then ask yourself what size you like.
- Make sure the computer has an SD card reader. Most new computers have card readers so this will not be too difficult.
