Coarse fishing is a term which originated in the 19th century and is used in the United Kingdom and Ireland for angling for coarse fish. Coarse fish are types of freshwater fish other than game fish. The sport, as well as the techniques used are popular in the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. This sport is thought to be a gentleman's pursuit in Europe.

There are different types of coarse fishing, depending on the nature and attitude of the angler.

  • Pleasure-angling. As can be guessed form the name, this is fishing just for fun without putting in too much effort and with anything caught being a big bonus.
  • Match angling. This is a recreational contest between anglers. This can be individual or club contests. These contests are held at local, regional, national and international levels.
  • Specimen hunting. The aim of this type of coarse fishing is to specifically target a species of fish. Most do this in order to weigh and photograph it as a personal best catch. The main target species for this type of coarse fishing include carp, zander, pike, chub, barbel, perch and Wels catfish. Some anglers are even willing to spend weeks camping just to get that perfect moment.

Coarse Fishing Rods

There are several types of rods available. Each rod has a purpose. For example, in float fishing you will need a float rod. Each type of coarse fishing requires different equipment. Float rods are often manufactures from fiberglass or carbon fibred. Carbon fiber rods are more expensive but they are lighter and they do not break easily like fiberglass. the rods come in sizes of 10ft to 13ft. Choose a rod that suits your build.

The rings on the rod are usually manufactures from different materials. It can be made from stainless steel, aluminum or silicon carbide. Silicon carbide is expensive, bit it provides a much better cast because it is friction free and it helps prolong the life span. Ledger rods are similar in some ways to float rods. The only difference is they come in 2 sections and they range from 9ft to 11ft. Some ledger rods have a screw fixing in the top eye to attach a quivertip or a swingtip. Quivertip rods have a quivertips built into it and are usually for very light and sensitive bites.

Reels for Coarse Fishing

There are three main types of reels, the fixed-spool reel, centre-pin reel and the closed-face reel. Each type of reel is suitable for different conditions. For example, fly-fishing reels and carp reels are different from other types. The fixed spool reel is the most popular reel used today. It has many qualities which anglers like so much. Most fixed spool reels can hold different lines and most generally have spare pools. Deep pools can hold more lines and shallow ones hole less. An adjustable clutch is located either at the front of the spool or the rear.

The centre pin reel can be used for trotting a float on a fast, strong, flowing river. It is quick to retrieve the line with this reel. All that needs to be done is to bat the drum with the hand. This is a favorite among many top anglers. The reel is also very good when spinning with light line.

Hooks and Line

Each hook has small differences. The type of hook is chosen based on personal choice. There are barbless hooks, semi-barbed and barbed hooks. Barbed hooks have a sharp, little piece called the bard sticking out of the hook to prevent the fish from coming off the hook easily. Check your club rules before using this because it is banned from many waters. The semi-barbed hook has a much smaller bard. The barbless has no barb at all. They come in various sizes. The higher the number, the smaller the hook. There are also spade-end hooks and eyed hooks available. Spade-end hooks are tied with nylon and attached to the main line. Do not worry because there is a tool available that helps you do this.

The type of line will depend on the type of fish you are planning to catch. The bigger the fish you are planning on catching, the heavier the breaking strain. For example, if you were fishing pike you would need a wire trace with a 20lb breaking strain in addition to your main line, which should be between 10lb, and 12lb breaking strain.
