Types of Pool Lights

  • Simple white pool lights. Among all the type of swimming pool lights, this is the most common. The standard incandescent and quartz halogen lights are the most cost effective and provide strong illumination. These are waterproof which makes it suitable for use in the pool. They come especially sealed inside a protective waterproof fixture which fits in a niche in the pool wall. These protect people from electrical shocks.
  • Led pool lights. More people are now replacing their traditional lights with this type. These are available with color options which provide various modes to make the pool water appear to be different colors with the flick of a switch. It provides the entire spectrum of colors. They are perfect for outdoor dinner parties because of the calming colors that provide a nice, romantic style of lighting. Led pool light is also cheaper compared to fiber optics pool lighting. However, led is more expensive than the traditional quartz halogen light. The good thing about them is they consume a small fraction of power which saves you up to 90% of energy.
  • Floating pool lights. These come in a wide array of decorative styles and colors. They also provide a fun and festive mood for pool and barbecue parties. Some floating pool lights run on batteries which need replacing often. Some of these floating lights project light upwards while others have specially made colored lighting lenses which makes the bottom of the pool a wonderland. A floating pool light is a great addition to a party.
  • Solar pool lights. These work by capturing the sun's energy thru solar collectors located on top of the waterproof case. The collected solar energy then recharges the battery located within the light. The solar pool lights are then turned on automatically at night using a light sensor. No costly electricity is used. These lights are usually small and they are portable. They can float or they can be secured to an area.
  • Fiber optic pool lights. These have become extremely popular over the years. These lights run through a cable which can be placed underwater or surround the pool's rim. No electricity is used for the cable. This is what makes the fiber optic lights safe and easy to use, even a homeowner can install it without any professional help. Most pools require multiple fiber optic lights for adequate lighting.

Advantages of Using Fiber Optic Lighting

Having your own pool has endless benefits. You get to swim whenever you feel like it right in your own backyard. Swimming during night time, though, is not safe, unless your pool is equipped with lights to illuminate the sides as well as the bottom of the pool. Fiber optics lighting is fast becoming the popular choice in pool lighting. It is a very unique way in lighting pools, museums, etc. Fiber optics is made of very find, long strands of perfect glass which are barely the diameter of human hair. These are bound together in what is called an optical cable. A fiber optic can be composed of 10, 50, 100 or even thousands of individual fiber optic cables. Fiber optics has many advantages which will be discussed below.

  1. Waterproof. Fiber optics is impervious to water. They can be submersed in the water and left indefinitely. They will last for years underwater.
  2. Long lasting. Fiber optics has a very small possibility of ever failing. As long as you make sure that the jacket remains in one piece or the fiber optic strands are not subjected to chemicals, they will last for a very long time. It saves a big amount of money for maintenance and replacement costs.
  3. Protects pool color. Maintaining the colors of the inner wall fresh and vibrant costs a lot of money. The ultraviolet light given off by the sun can dull the color of the paint as well as the fiberglass gel surface. It can dull plastic, metal and vinyl. It is important to keep the pool covered; the fiber optic pool lighting will not speed up the fading of the color.
  4. No heat. Almost all light sources emit heat. Even LED lights give off heat. Fiber optics, on the other hand, does not. There is also very little heat emitted through the fiber optic wires. This completely eliminates worries because of lights burning out.
