Types of Bunk Beds
- Metal Bunk Beds. These are among the most durable bed structures available. These are fabricated in different sizes and this makes it possible to use different-sized mattresses on individual bunks. Metal bunk beds come in various colors which can match the existing decor and furniture in the room. These beds are fitted with climbing ladders which are welded on strongly enough to be permanent fixtures.
- Futon Bunk Beds. These offer sitting as well as sleeping areas in rooms which have limited space. The top bunk bed area contains the mattress and the bottom bunk resembles a couch or futon. This creates a comfortable sitting area. This type of bunk bed looks stylish and attractive.
Types of Bunk Beds
- Loft Bunk Beds. Children’s loft bunk beds have sufficient height between the bed bottom and the floor. The length is about five feet and this allows play, desk or storage space for the child.
- Standard Bunk Beds. These are the most basic type of bunk beds available. They are composed of two bunks, one on top of the other, and both have mattresses. There are also triple bunk beds available. Triple bunk beds are suitable for the most space-challenged bedrooms. A standard bunk bed is mostly made from wood or metal but it can also be made from other materials. The L-shaped bunk bed is a type which is a complete departure from the usual beds. Instead of being connected, the individual bunks are built to slide in and out like drawers. This type of bed is great for if you want to have chaise lounges or accent chairs in the bedroom and not have the bed take up all the space.
- Themed Bunk Beds. These are great for customizing a child's bedroom. The most popular themes for boys are sports and racing cars. Girls, on the other hand, prefer princess and dollhouse themes.
How to Buy Bunk Beds for Children
Children at some point will want a bunk bed. Children bunk beds are not hard to find but there are some guidelines which should be kept in mind when purchasing one.
- Consider the children's age. Children grow rapidly so you need to purchase a bunk bed which the child will not outgrow in just a year. You want to be able to get the longest use as you possible can from the bunk bed.
- Check all options. Take the child with you when shopping for bunk beds. You would also want to get the child's input. After all, it is the child who will be sleeping on the bed. Exhaust all options, both online and offline before deciding which bunk bed to buy. Depending on the child's age, you may opt for a bunk bed with a theme or a standard one.
- Check for security. Consider the child's safety. When children sleep on the top bunk bed, there is a chance of the child falling so it is best to opt for bunk beds with guardrails. Some manufacturers construct bunk beds with a guardrail on one side only, because generally one side of the bed is pushed against the wall. Most people recommend getting a bunk bed with rails on all four sides. Measure for yourself the distance between the bed frame of the upper bunk and the lowest guardrail. It shouldn't exceed three and a half inches. The upper bunk should be made with guardrails that expand a minimum of five inches over the surface of the mattress.
- Inspect the ladder. There should be a ladder included in the set. This makes it easy for the child to climb to get to the top bunk. Make sure that the ladder is secured at the top bunk portion of the bed frame. Make sure that it is strong enough to support a child’s weight and that it won’t dislodge when the child climbs up or down.
- Select the correct mattress. The mattress should be top quality and it should fit the bed frame perfectly.
